18 Fall Fashion in the Queen City: Charlotte’s September Style Shift September in Charlotte creates a fashion problem that people in colder cities rarely under- stand. The calendar says fall, store windows say fall, but the afternoon temperature can still feel like summer. That makes early fall style in the Queen City less about immediately reach- ing for heavy sweaters and more about learning how to transition. The easiest place to begin is with layers. Lightweight jackets, relaxed blazers, overshirts and cardigans can change an outfit without making it uncomfortable. Wear them during a cooler morning, remove them when temperatures climb and bring them back when the evening set- tles in. Color can do some of the seasonal work too. Earth tones, deeper greens, burgundy, brown, navy and warm neutrals introduce a fall mood even when the fabric remains light. Instead of dressing for October weather that has not arrived, Charlotte residents can dress for September while borrowing fall’s visual personality. Footwear offers another transition. Sandals can gradually give way to sneakers, loafers, ankle boots and other closed shoes. Denim also becomes easier to bring back into rotation, espe- cially when paired with lighter tops.
