December 2025

33 Between 2018 and 2023, the region saw a nearly 20 % expansion in its high- tech workforce, reaching over 70,000 individuals. Behind that growth is a deep network of support for found - ers and startups. Organiza - tions like Innovate Char - lotte run events, incubators, and mentoring programs. The recently launched co- working and entrepreneur - ship hub CO‑LAB at UNC Charlotte has already at- tracted multiple early-stage companies, accelerators, and solo founders a tangible illus - tration of how academia, in- dustry, and entrepreneurship are converging in Charlotte. Venture capital and startup financing have also picked up. According to a recent 2024 report, the Charlotte re - gion saw $1.5 billion raised across 261 VC deals a sharp increase from the years prior. Local en- trepreneurs say that more than ever, Char- lotte offers a support- ive ecosys- tem: access to capital, lower op- erating costs compared to traditional tech hubs, and a growing com- munity of like-minded founders and innovators. This shift is visible even outside tech and science in logistics, fintech, ad - vanced manufacturing, and creative industries. For instance, a European industrial-intelligence company recently chose Charlotte as the site of its first U.S. base, citing the region’s manufacturing history, its growing tech infrastructure, and the opportunity to work with local universities on ro- botics and AI integration. What makes Charlotte’s in - novation culture unique is this mixture: big investments (like The Pearl), grassroots startup energy (from CO-LAB, In - novate Charlotte, etc.), and a growing pool of skilled talent who don’t necessarily demand the salaries of larger tech hubs. Add to that Charlotte’s rela - tively lower cost of living and central location in the South- east and you have a fertile environment for innovation. For residents and creatives this means more opportuni- ties. For businesses an ecosys - tem where risk is balanced by support; where ideas can grow, pivot, and scale. And for Char- lotte itself a chance to diver- sify beyond finance, to build a future powered by innovation, collaboration, and resilience. What new innovations have your attention?
