22 HOW CHARLOTTE BECAME A HUB FOR CREATIVE PROFESSIONALS Charlotte’s image as “Banktown” has long dominated headlines—but some- thing more colorful, more human, and undeniably creative has quietly been redefining our city. Today, cre - ative professionals—from visual art- ists and designers to educators, makers, and tech creatives—find real opportu - nity in Charlotte. Here’s how the city turned into a vibrant hub for creativity: Strategic Cultural Investment & Infra- structure Charlotte’s journey began with inten- tional cultural planning. In 2021, the City Council’s Arts & Culture Committee was tasked with integrating arts into econom- ic strategy—recognizing culture’s ability to drive business growth and commu- nity identity. This led to an unprecedent- ed $21 million in public funding for arts and culture in FY2025, backed by both city and county contributions. Simultaneously, the Levine Center for the Arts anchored a bold downtown cul- tural campus: housing the Mint Museum Uptown, Bechtler Museum, and Har- vey B. Gantt Center. These institutions collectively gave Charlotte a creative downtown skyline. Built-in Support Systems for Creatives Charlotte’sgrowthasacreativecitydidn’t happen by chance—it was nurtured by both nonprofit and public sector support: McColl Center forArt + Innovation offers freeartist residencies,galleries,andcross- disciplinary studio space, helping artists thrive in an immersive environment. Community resource networks like Charlotte Is Creative bolster artists with micro-grants, professional vis- ibility, and collaborative opportunities. Its “Helpful Unfettered Gifts (HUG)” micro-grants—small but meaningful amounts—springboard hundreds of creative projects citywide. Grassroots Platforms & Inclusive Funding Publicagenciesandnonprofitshave tak - en meaningful steps toward inclusion: The Creative Growth Grants (2025) provide $2,500–$25,000 to grassroots artists and nonprofits—backed by workshops, coaching, and resources to bolster their projects.
