6 Driving also changes the pace of travel. You see the land- scape shift instead of appear- ing somewhere new in a few hours. Cities thin into suburbs. Suburbs become open roads. Mountains, farmland, desert, coastline, or forest arrive grad- ually. That transition gives the mind time to catch up. Music sounds different on the road. So does conversation. Long stretches of driving create room for sto- ries that rarely happen during a quick meal or a busy week. The best road trips leave space for detours. THE LONG WAY HOME: WHY ROAD TRIPS STILL FEEL DIFFERENT There is a particular freedom in leaving without an airport gate, baggage claim, or fixed boarding time. A road trip begins when the car starts moving. The destination matters, but the space between home and arriv- al becomes part of the experience. A highway exit can turn into lunch. A roadside sign can lead to a view you did not know ex- isted. A small town can become the place you remember most. Photo by | cottonbro studio
