8 ISLAND GAMES 2025 SMALL ISLANDS, BIG DREAMS Every two years, a lesser-known yet fiercely beloved sporting event brings together islands scattered across Europe and beyond. The Island Games, first held in 1985, returns this July with Orkney, Scotland, as its host. Run- ning from July 12 to 18, 2025, the Games will welcome approximately 2,000 athletes from over 20 island com- munities to compete in a celebration of sport, camara- derie, and local pride. While it lacks the global spotlight of the Olympics or the high sponsorship stakes of major tournaments, for participants and supporters alike, the Is- land Games represent something deeper: the chance to stand tall for your community on an international stage. Orkney’s selection as this year’s host has ignited excite- ment across its archipelago. Located off the northern coast of Scotland, Orkney is known for its Neolithic heri- tage sites, dramatic sea cliffs, and tight-knit communi - ties.
