26 A City Built for Movement How Charlotte Is Designing Mobility Into Everyday Life Charlotte is growing fast. New neighbor - hoods, expanding business districts, and rising traffic are often the face of that growth. But underneath the hustle and bus - tle, the city is quietly working on some - thing just as important: transforming how people move. Through a growing network of greenways, protected bike lanes, and multi-use trails, Charlotte is building an in - frastructure that encourages walking, cy - cling, jogging and simple, car-free mobility. Greenways: Nature-First Mobility One of Charlotte’s biggest moves toward walkable transit is the expansion of its greenway system. The Cross Charlotte Trail (XCLT) is a prime example. When complete, the XCLT will stretch over 30 miles linking neighborhoods, parks, employment cent - ers, and public-transit hubs across Mecklen - burg County. Around 140,000 residents and 130,000 jobs will lie within walking dis - tance of the trail or connected greenways. One of the most popular corridors is the Little Sugar Creek Greenway. Since its extension in 2021, the greenway has connected people from Pineville and South Charlotte to Up- town making it safer and easier for residents to walk or bike to parks, shops, or work. Other paths like Irwin Creek Greenway, McAlpine Creek Greenway, and newly opened segments like the Briar–Little Hope Creek Greenway also provide essential con - nectivity across different parts of the city. These greenways aren’t just for weekend lei - sure many people now use them as part of their daily routines: walking dogs, biking to work, meeting friends, or simply enjoying a peaceful stroll. Surveys from the region show paved walking and biking trails remain the #1 requested amenity among residents. Bicycles & Protected Lanes: Safe Cycling, Everyday Commuting The city’s efforts go beyond greenways. With the Uptown CycleLink project, Charlotte is stitching together a 40+ mile network of pro - tected and separated bike lanes through center city creating safe, practical routes for cyclists
