18 Small Business Roots in CLT The Quiet Backbone of the Queen City In a city often celebrated for its banking towers, corporate headquarters, and rapid growth, the real heartbeat of Charlotte lies in its small businesses. From independent cafés to fam - ily-run contractors, boutique retailers, creative startups, and neighborhood services these small enterprises are the quiet backbone of the Queen City, fueling jobs, local identity, and economic resilience. A City Built on Small Business As of 2025, the region around Charlotte is home to tens of thousands of small firms. Ac - cording to the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance (CLT Alliance), small businesses de - fined broadly as companies with fewer than 20 employees account for around 75% of all businesses in the region. In Mecklenburg County, data show that between 2012 and 2021 nearly 6,900 new small businesses (with fewer than 500 employees) were launched representing a 24.5% growth in that segment. Many of these are microbusinesses, employing fewer than five people, underscoring the city’s entrepreneurial energy at a grassroots level.
