Finally at a hair after nine, it was time for the final band of the night to come on, the truly one-of-a-kind alt rock ti- tans, The Smashing Pumpkins. Caped in his black dress, Billy Corgan came on stage surrounded by three quarters of the band’s original lineup with James Iha on guitar and Jimmy Chamberlain on drums, as well as guitarist Jeff Schroeder and a touring bassist and backup singer. Balancing between the band’s upcoming album “Atum” and classic hits that fans packed the arena for, the band wasted no time jumping into “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” and “Today”, getting the crowd into a frenzy. Billy supplemented his gui- tar playing with weird dancing as he sung some of the band’s newer hits like “Cyr”, before providing a heavy-hitting cover of Talking Heads’ classic “Once In a Life- time” that was much slower, heavier, and more distorted than the original. Overall, the first half of the show was the darker portion, which showed up in the form of figurines on crosses during Ava Adore and song selections that allowed for dis- torted jam sessions including a drum solo from Jimmy Chamberlain during Solara. While the performance started in a dark- er place, the classic interplay between Bil- ly Corgan and James Iha was true to form as it provided one of the true highlights of the night when the two played an acoustic performance with only the two of them on guitar of “Tonight, Tonight”. As the band found ways to highlight their new- er music later in the evening, there were multiple interesting ways of staging songs including a pair of wrestlers coming on stage during the band’s latest hit, “Be- guiled”. Flanked by two poles of lights and with a giant star light overhead, the band’s visuals were fantastic throughout the evening, setting the tone for both heavi- er portions and sadder songs. Towards the end of the show was the most emo- tionally charged portion of the evening, as the band played their classic “Disarm” as the penultimate song of the night. As Billy noted, this song and the band’s per- formance as a whole was dedicated to his father who lived in South Florida his past twenty years and “passed away six or seven months ago”. Overall, this led to a truly memorable performance in what will likely be one of the best shows on the entire tour. Clic k here to view the full gallery on Ryze! 24
